Online Workshop On Preparative HPLC

Alireza Ghassempour is a Professor of analytical chemistry and director of medicinal Plants and Drugs Research Institute in the Shahid Beheshti University of Iran.

This workshop was held in two days, 28 and 29 Sep, and attended by 23 participants drawn from different countries and a full spectrum of scientists and researchers.

The first day of the workshop was divided into four parts. In the first part, a brief introduction of the Large Scale Liquid Chromatography method and the governing theories were explained, and then the equipment required for this method was introduced.

In the second part, pre-made videos were shown to present the issues in a practical way. in this section packing method for the preparative column was presented and showed in a practical way by video.

The third part of the program dealt with how to scale up and its theoretical considerations. Three scale-up methods have introduced that including Stack Injection, Counter-Current Chromatography, and Simulated Moving Bed Chromatography (SMB).

The last part of the first day was dedicated to how to extract omega-3 from existing compounds such as fish oil. In this section, after presenting the methods of extraction, the omega-3 extraction process was described in practice.

The second day of the program began with the introduction of the Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) method and then the applications of the HPLC method and the required equipment were described. Purification of peptides was one of the cases described to illustrate the application of the preparative HPLC method. In the last part of the workshop, the scorpion venom purification process was demonstrated live in the laboratory by using the HPLC method.

The medicinal plants and drugs research institute Shahid Beheshti University of Iran, under the management of Dr. Ghasempour, announced its readiness for any kind of research and commercial cooperation and called for joint workshops on related issues.
